CURTIS E. JOHNSON

Curtis E. Johnson, 75, of Grinnell, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at his home.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 29, at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Inurnment will be held at Westfield Cemetery at a later date.

He was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Algona to Charles and Ethel Kelley Johnson. He was raised in Algona where he attended school. From 1956 to 1964 he served with the United States Army at bases in the United States and Germany. On Aug. 25, 1964, he was united in marriage with Delores May Holland in Fairmont, Minn. The couple moved to Grinnell where he worked as a painter for Blom & Criswell, Clark Brothers Painting Services and Criswell Painting and Decorating Company, retiring in the late 1990s.

He was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge where he enjoyed social gatherings. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, golf, gardening and collecting eagles, and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

He is survived by his daughters, Kim Johnson and Kris Sieck, both of Grinnell, Cindy Downs of Montour, Pam Mott of Iowa Falls, Kay Abernathey of Grinnell and Jo Carlton of Alexander; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; four sisters, Virginia Baxter of Clear Lake, Lois Brinkema of Kamrar, Shirley Metzger of Ames and Janell Kickbush of Clear Lake, and one brother, Robert Johnson of Clear Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell, Rodney and Kenneth Johnson; and four sisters, Elizabeth Burne, Darlene Johnson, Joan Johnson and Marion Johnson.
