BRUCE PACKARD

Bruce G. Packard, 85, of the Mayflower Home died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Monday, Aug. 20, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

The body was cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, in Denison Chapel of the Mayflower Home, with the Rev. Raymond C. Lott, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Norman Goodbrod. The ashes will be buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, with the Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell in charge of arrangements.

The son of Cyrenus Henry and Margaret Diane McQueen Packard, he was born Sept. 14, 1904, at Lake City, Iowa. He graduated from Sioux City Central High School in 1922 and received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Iowa State College in 1928.

He was married to Ruth Maria Hathaway Oct. 4, 1938, in Sioux City. Mr. Packard worked as a civil engineer with the Chicago & North Western Railroad for much of his life. The family had lived throughout the Midwest before retiring in 1969.

During World war II, he served as a major with the 7th Army Headquarters Unit in the European theater. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church; the community theater of Escanaha, Mich.; the Kiwanis Club of Elmhurst, Ill., which he had served as president, treasurer and secretary; and Landmark Masonic Lodge No. 103 of Sioux City.

Mr. and Mrs. Packard came to the Mayflower Home in 1986.

He is survived by one daughter, Patricia Yunglas? of Wichita, Kan.; two sons, the Rev. B. Gordon Packard of Des Moines and Alan H. of Fon du Lac, Wis.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth Packard; and a half-sister, Essie Butzier.
