THOMAS PIERCE RITES SATURDAY

Thomas D. Pierce, 25, of Pittsburg, Kan., formerly of Grinnell, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 10, at his home. The death was ruled a suicide.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with burial at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

The son of Raymond F. and Ruth V. Beck Pierce, he was born in Grinnell July 5, 1957. He and his family later moved to Sigourney, and he graduated from Sigourney High School in 1975. He entered the U.S. Army, and following his discharge moved to Pittsburg in 1977. He had been employed at a Sambo's restaurant and a Pancake Hut there, and for the past few months had been associated with the Broadway Lumber Co. of Pittsburg.

He was married to Rose Jones in 1979.

Survivors include his wife; his parents; two stepdaughters, Stacy and Carrie Whittenburg; a stepson, Jamie Whittenburg; two sisters, Janet Baker of New Sharon and Sherri Remmers of St. Cloud, Minn.; and six brothers, Michael of Pella, Roger of Pittsburg, Alan of the U.S. Navy, Dennis of the U.S. Air Force, Melvin of Pella and Stephen of Pittsburg; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Naomi Pierce, of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kevin, in 1965.
