FOR MRS. DEXTER

Mrs. Katheryn Dexter, 826 East Street, the widow of Joseph I. Dexter, passed away early Wednesday morning (Dec. 31) at Grinnell General Hospital East. Mrs. Dexter had been hospitalized the past 2 weeks.

The daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Welsh DeLuhery, Mrs. Dexter was born on Dec. 3, 1881 in Fremont Township, Fayette County, Iowa. She graduated from Sumner High School and attended State College of Iowa at Cedar Falls; Drake University and the University of Iowa where she prepared for her teaching career in elementary education.

Mrs. Dexter, then Miss DeLuhery, taught for three years in the Brooklyn schools before coming to Grinnell in 1918. She taught for 30 years at Davis school in Grinnell before teaching in Searsboro for a year as well as the Kellogg schools for a year.

On May 29, 1947 she was married to Joseph I. Dexter, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell. Mr. and Mrs. Dexter farmed for 11 years south of Grinnell until his retirement when they moved to Grinnell. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; the Altar and Rosary Society; and had been a charter member of the Poweshiek County March of Dimes Board of Directors.

Survivors include her sister, Miss Agnes DeLuhery of Grinnell and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Dexter was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and her husband, Joe, on Nov. 20, 1960.

Requiem Mass for Mrs. Katheryn Dexter will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday (Jan. 2) at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Leo V. Kuebrich, pastor of the church, officiating.

Pallbearers will be Donald McSweeney, Patrick O'Brien, Ross Lincoln, James Reagan Jr., James Stephens and Bill Ritter. Burial will be made in Mt. Calvary Cemetery near Westgate, Iowa.

The Rosary will be recited at 8:15 p.m. New Year's Day at the Smith Funeral Home where friends may call.
