FRED JOHNSON SERVICES HELD

Fred W. Johnson, 89, of 1509 Main St., Grinnell, former executive secretary of the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce died of a heart ailment Monday, July 28, at his home.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Philip J. Ramstad, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner.

Pallbearers were Dr. Robert Baumann, Dr. Floyd Beaver, Myron Heneke, Donald Renaud, James Urfer and John Wemer. Honorary bearers were Marion Onthank, Richard Sears, Charles Vogel and Jim White.

Graveside rites were conducted by members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials in Mr. Johnson's name may be made to the Grinnell Rotary Club's student foreign exchange program.

The son of Francis and Laura Johnson, he was born on Nov. 1, 1896, in Belleville, Kan. The family moved to Lincoln, Neb., where he graduated from high school.

During World War I, he served with the U.S. Army in Europe. He was married to Jessamine "Jed" Rossman on July 15, 1922, in Cheyenne, Wyo. The couple lived in Holdredge and Kearney, Neb., before moving to Grinnell in 1935.

Mr. Johnson owned and operated the Ben Franklin Store here. He served for five years as the Chamber's executive secretary. He was a past president of the Grinnell Rotary Club and a past district governor of Rotary. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and the Elks Lodge and had served as drive chairman for the Grinnell United Way.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Janet Schmidt of Grinnell; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald L., who was killed in action in World War II; five brothers and one sister.
