MARVIN SCHMIDT

Marvin Schmidt, 78, of 1509 Main St., Grinnell, died of a respiratory ailment, Sunday, March 11, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Del Dawes, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner.

Casket bearers were Dave Jeffries, Steve Kenkel, Earl Lemke, George Trowbridge, Ryan Trowbridge, Clifford "Kip" Van Auken and Denise Whannel. Honorary bearers were Eric Krohn, Michelle Krohn, Danielle Miller and Russell Whannel.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

He was born March 30, 1922, at Strawberry Point to Ray and Pansy Randall Schmidt. He was raised on the family farm, attended rural school and graduated from Little Port High School.

He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in India during World War II. He was discharged in 1946, then played semi-professional baseball in Oklahoma for a few years. He worked as a lineman for General Telephone Co. in northeast Iowa, moving to Grinnell in 1962. He was employed here as an administrator for General Telephone.

He was married to Janet Gwin Nov. 16, 1967, in Grinnell.

Surviving are his wife; three step-daughters, Kathy Phipps of Ankeny, Cindy Jeffries of New Haven, Ind., and Deb Trowbridge of Polk City; five grandchildren; and one brother, Alva Schmidt.

His parents preceded him in death.
