SERVICES HELD

Harold LaVerne Etes, 64, of 1414 Reed St., Grinnell, died early Monday at a Branson, Mo., motel of an apparent heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Etes were en route to Arkansas for a vacation.

The son of Fred J. and Ella May Jorgenson Etes, he was born June 28, 1908, in Byron, Ill. Following his graduation from Byron Community High School, he attended business college in Adrian, Mich.

Mr. Etes had been associated with the telephone industry since his youth, having worked as a groundman and lineman with the former Mid-States Telephone Co. in Byron. In 1929 he moved to Adrian, Mich., where he was associated with Tri-County Telephone Co., working his way as a combinationman up to iision? manager.

While in Adrian, he was married to Audria Robinson Barney Feb. 22, 1930. The couple had two children, Robert H. Etes of Norwalk, Conn., and Mrs. Robert (Barbara) McConnell of Grinnell.

The family continued to live in Adrian until the fall of 1941 when Mr. Etes accepted a position with the former Wabash Telephone Co. at Bloomington, Ill., as district manager. In 1951 he became associated with the Missouri Telephone Co. at Columbia, Mo., as general manager, until the family moved to Grinnell in 1956. He held the position of plant director of General Telephone Co. of the Midwest until his retirement in 1970. He was a member of the Independent Pioneer Telephone Association, the GrinnelL Elks Lodge, and the Grinnell Country Club.

Survivors include his wife Audria; his two children; three grandchildren, Jack Etes of Norwalk, Conn., and Patricia McConnell and Robert H. McConnell, both of Grnnell; and his sister, Mrs. Glenn (Mildred) Glawe of Byron, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Edwin, who died in infancy.

Private services for Mr. Etes were held Wednesday afternoon at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Newell E. Davis, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the coronary care unit at Grinnell General Hospital.
