Martin Whiteman was born in Ohio in 1841 [see note], came to DeKalb, Ill., in 1842, where he grew to manhood and lived in the vicinity of DeKalb until the year 1873, when he moved to Dowegial, Mich., where he lived until 1876 when he came to Grinnell where he has lived until the time of his death, which occurred very suddenly May 20, 1901. He was married to Hannah E Sebring, Aug. 7, 1883, who preceded him to the better world some four years ago. On May 2d, 1900 he was united in marriage to Mary Malcom, who is left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband. Mr. Whiteman was a good citizen, a respected neighbor and a loyal friend. The funeral services were conducted at his late residence on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock by the Rev. W.P. Stoddard, and at the grave by the Masons of which order he was a valuable member, and who have adopted appropriate resolutions testifying to his integrity and worth.
