DELILA STAGG HANNAY

Delila Eleanor Stagg Hannay, only child of Lydia Miller Stagg and Eli Stagg, was born at Tipton, Iowa, April 24th, 1880. Quiet release from illness of several months came Sunday afternoon, Dec, 2nd at a local hospital.

Coming to Grinnell with her parents in 1896, Mrs. Hannay has ever maintained great interest in the community's growth and varied activities. She was a most devoted member and regular attendant of the Congregational church, with which she united in November, 1896. For some time she was a member of the choir, also of the vesper choir.

Enrolled in the Grinnell academy in 1898 and '99, she later graduated from the College Conservatory of Music. In '98 she was 1st assistant librarian of the Grinnell library, at that time housed in 2nd floor of the Spaulding Block. After reorganizing the School of Music Library she served as its librarian from 1903-1907. She taught piano and organ, and there are some who will remember her as their teacher in rural school west of Grinnell.

She was married to Robert Hannay Sept. 7, 1911. After several years on their farm northeast of town they farmed for a time in southern Minnesota, where she also had a class of rural music pupils. During that time (in 1927) occurred the death of her mother who had lived with her after Mr. Stagg's passing in 1902.

Mrs. Hannay was preceded in death by the older son, Eli John in 1939, and by her husband in 1942.

Survivors include a son, Robert S. Hannay, of Omaha, Nebraska, and five grandchildren, Patricia, Pamela, Cheryl, Elizabeth and Robert D.

Services were held at Smith funeral home Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5th, with interment at Hazelwood. Music was furnished by Mrs. R.H. Auman and Mrs. Geraldine Westfall. Pallbearers were Russell Baggs, Ben Buck, Harold Buck, Grinnell Dunham, Elmer Iverson and Croft Pilgrim.
