BENJAMIN A. MITCHELL

Benjamin A. Mitchell, 84, of Indianola, former long-time resident of Grinnell, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 1:30 p.m. at smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Mr. Stephen Witt, deacon of St. Mary's Catholic Church, officiating. Music will be by his grandson, Mike Gross. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Benjamin A. Mitchell Memorial Fund.

He was born Dec. 13, 1918, in Lynnville, the son of Benjamin A. and Rebecca Sparks Mitchell. He was a graduate of Newton High School and was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, serving in the European theater. He was married on March 6, 1946, in Nogent, France, to Janine Marcelle Henry. They made their home in Grinnell where he was manager of Mitchell Motor Company for 30 years, followed by 26 years of selling Electrolux Vacuum Cleaners prior to retirement. In recent years he had made his home in Des Moines and most recently in Indianola.

He was a member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge, Grinnell American Legion and Veterans of foreign Wars.

He is survived by three daughters, Danielle Gross of Grinnell, Benita Foy, of Des Moines and Michele Bales of Indianola; five grandchildren and one brother, F.W. Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and one sister.
