Elmer A. Mitchell, 89, of St. Francis Manor died Monday evening, Jan. 24, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson of the Grinnell Christian Church officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner, and vocalist will be Mike Mitchell.

Pallbearers will be Alan Close, Mike Mitchell, Bill Noel, Bob Noel, Jimmy Salsman Jr. and Jimmy Salsman Sr. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials in Mr. Mitchell's name may be made to St. Francis Manor and left at the funeral home.

The son of Montgomery and Saphrony Woolard Mitchell, he was born Nov. 30, 1893, on a farm south of Sully. He was married to Grace I. Onthank on Feb. 18, 1914, at Grinnell. The couple farmed near Kellogg for a year before going to southern Minnesota to farm, then returned to Iowa after five years to farm near Taintor, Lynnville and New Sharon before coming to the Malcom area in 1945. The couple had been married 68 years.

Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Malcom Odd Fellows Lodge, the Bethel Grange and the Westfield Church.

He is survived by his wife, Grace; his children, Eva Noel of Grinnell, Viola Brown of Moline, Ill., and Raymond A. Mitchell of Lake Ponderosa; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandchild; one brother and four sisters.
