ELSIE VAN GORP

Elsie Van Gorp, 82, of Grinnell died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 12, at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organs was Kathleen McCune. Pallbearers were Ken and Jeremy Bolen, Shawn Brown, Jim Saunders and Chris and Carrie Van Gorp. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 8, 1922, in Richland Township, Jasper County, to Edward and Ollie Phipps Onthank. She attended rural school in Jasper and Poweshiek Counties and later attended Grinnell High School. She was married to Delmar Van Gorp on March 24, 1944, at her parents' home in Washington Township near Grinnell. The couple farmed north of Searsboro until 1958 when they moved to Grinnell. She was employed as a nurse's aid at St. Francis Hospital and later at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Wiener of Montour and Deloris (Dori) Brown of Grinnell; four sisters, Rose Johnson of Searsboro, Mollie Saunders of Grinnell, Grace Davis of Marshalltown and Irene Kester of Montezuma; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and a special friend, Melvin Verwers of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Daniel and three sisters, Mildred Claybrook, Darlene Hamor and Mary Doris Onthank.
