MRS. LORANA GERMAN

Lorana Valetta Thorp, daughter of George and Eliza Thorp was born in *Vinton County, Iowa (see note) June 1, 1868, and died in Grinnell January 3, 1944, aged seventy-five years, seven months and two days.

She spent the first fifteen years of her life around Green Mountain and Marshalltown and moved to Grinnell with her parents in 1893 and has resided here ever since.

She was married to Philip German in October, 1893, to which union were born six children, Ruby, the first child died in infancy, Naomi died at the age of eleven. She is survived by two daughters, Marie Peterson of Humboldt, and Thelma Newell of Des Moines, also two sons, Herbert of Tulsa, Okla., and George of Grinnell. There is also one brother, John Thorp of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Mr. German died in 1927. They were both members of the Salvation Army and had an "Army wedding." After the army ceased operations in Grinnell, they united with the Friends church. Lorana German was faithful to her church and was highly esteemed for her consistent life and for her activities in the church.

While many of her friends have preceded her in death, there are also many who remain to mourn the loss of a real friend.

Funeral services were held in the Friends Church Wednesday, January 5, with the pastor, Rev. George B. Evans in charge. Interment in Hazelwood cemetery.

Pall bearers were Arthur McDowell, William Watkins, Sanford Underwood, Peter Fowler, George L. Quivey and Ed Adams.

Singers were Mr. and Mrs. Vine who rendered two selections.

NOTE: There is no Vinton County, Iowa. Marriage record states her birthplace as Marshall County, Iowa.
