RUSSELL HUGHES, 83

Russell B. Hughes, 83, formerly of rural Searsboro, died Sunday, February 8, 1998 at the Mayflower Health Center in Grinnell.

The family greeted friends Feb. 9 at Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon.

A private family graveside service was Tuesday, February 10 at Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. The Rev. Kevin Glesener of the New Sharon United Methodist Church officiated.

Russell was born on February 18, 1914 in Sutherland, the son of John Benjamin and Isabel Shirk Hughes. Raised and educated in Northwest Iowa, he graduated from Linn Grove High School before attending Morningside College in Sioux City. At Morningside, he was an outstanding football player.

Upon graduation in 1937, he spent the next nine years coaching football and basketball in Akron, Woodbine, Estherville, Storm Lake and Morningside College.

Russell married Marjorie Fleener on August 16, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

During World War II, he served as foreman at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in the Los Angeles area, specializing in final aircraft inspection.

In 1951, he began farming south of Searsboro where he lived until moving to the Mayflower Health Center in 1994.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Susan Kay Hughes.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie of St. Francis Manor; a daughter, Margaret Ann and her husband Dennis McMahan of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Russell F. and his wife, Sheri Hughes of rural Searsboro; five grandchildren, Daniel and David McMahan and Lauren, Erin and Katelyn Hughes and a sister, Ferrol Rhine of Ventura, Calif.
