HELEN LARSON

Helen I. Larson, 74, of Iowa City, died on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the John Epperson officiating. Casket bearers will be Alicia Nelson, Hezekiah Cross, Samuel Nelson, Joshua Nelson, Jacob Kriegel, Logan Kintz and Joseph Pettit. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. A reception will be held at the Eagles Club in Grinnell following the service.

Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Helen Larson Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Helen was born Feb. 7, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Christian and Eleanor Reed Murk. The family moved to Grinnell when she was two and she attended public schools in Grinnell. She was united in marriage with Joseph D. Pettit in Iowa City, and they had two daughters, Jill and Brenda. The couple lived in Grinnell and Iowa City. She later married Douglas W. Larson in Newton and they had one daughter, Stacy. Following the death of Douglas, she resided in Brooklyn and Grinnell before moving to Iowa City in 2009.

Helen enjoyed crocheting, oil painting, jig saw puzzles and cooking fried chicken and holiday treats. She also enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley music, reading and admiring butterflies.

Survivors include her three daughters, Jill A. Hines of Grinnell, Brenda L. Nelson of Iowa City and Stacy K. Kriegel of Grinnell; nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; and one sister, Connie McGinnis of Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Larson; her parents; and two sisters, Joyce and LaVone.
