The Grinnell (IA) Herald
Nov. 13, 1896

--Mary Ann Smith was born Jan'y 3d, 1812 at Copenhagen, Lewis Co., N.Y. She was married in 1837 to Rev. James H. Monroe, a Congregational minister. He died in less than three years. Two children were born to them both of whom are dead. She came to Princeton, Ill. in 1849. Here in 1866 she was married to Mr. Hinsdale Phelps. She died Nov. 10th, 1896 at the home of her grandson, Jay Monroe, having come here about two months ago to pass her few remaining days. Though called upon to pass through many severe trials she bore them with Christian grace. Those who knew her best loved her best. It may be truly said of her "she hath done what she could."

Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Monroe desire to thank the kind and sympathetic friends who assisted them during the illness and death of their grandmother, Mrs. E.H. Phelps.
