COLUMBIA - Owen James Matherly passed peacefully and comfortably in the arms of his parents on June 19th, 2016, in the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston after fighting against an inoperable congenital heart defect. Born May 24th, he touched many lives of family and friends near and far. During his brief visit on Earth, he enjoyed being swaddled tightly in the arms of loved ones, being read books and listening to soft lullabies. He was loved by all who met him and will be greatly missed. Owen was the son of Kevin and Sara Matherly of Columbia, South Carolina. His paternal grandparents are William and Tammie (Blankenship) Orio of Durham, North Carolina, and James Randy Matherly of Grinnell, Iowa; and maternal grandparents, James and Sharon McGrath of Yadkinville, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, we would be pleased to have you support the Ronald McDonald House Charities (https://donate.mhc.org) or the Pediatric Congenital Heart Association (congueringchd.org) to help other families through their journeys. A memorial service will be held in Columbia, South Carolina, with the date and time to be determined.
