The Grinnell (IA) Herald

--After an illness of seven years Ephriam Shields died at his home in south west Grinnell Saturday. Mr. Shields was born in 1836, near Canton, Illinois, and came to Iowa in 1845 with his parents. In 1856 he married Miss Lavinia Smith of Wapello county. From this union eleven children were born, seven sons and four daughters. Mr. Shields and family moved to this city in 1874 where he has since resided with the exception of three years in Nebraska, from 1887 till 1890. He leaves a wife and ten children, one son, William, having passed away in 1890, all but two of who were present at the funeral. These two were kept away by sickness, Alvin in Nebraska and Mrs. Dunn of Newton in the city. Services were conducted at the house at half past two o'clock, Sunday afternoon by the Rev. G.E. Morphy of the Baptist church, assisted by the Rev. W.P. Stoddard. Mr. Shields was not a member of the church though Mrs. Shields and several members of the family belong to the Baptist church and one son, James, is a member of the M.E. church. He was a good husband, kind father and lived a christian life.

We wish to thank the friends for their kindness and sympathy during the illness and death of our father and husband. MRS. SHIELDS AND FAMILY.

NOTE: Handwritten at the bottom of this obituary was "died March 23, 1900"
