MICHAEL STEFFEN, 58

Michael Steffen, 58, of Montezuma died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were at 10:30m a.m., Tuesday, June 23, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Ferrell officiating. Interment was held in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Gerald Michael Steffen was born, the son of Harold Ernest and Esther Naomi Schooley Steffen, on September 3, 1950, in Oskaloosa. He was raised on a farm near Gibson, and graduated from Tri-County High School with the class of 1968. Mike also attended Iowa State University where he received his degree in 1972. He worked as a Production Manager for Funks Seed Corn for several years, while living in Lone Tree. After retiring in 2002, Mike moved to Montezuma to aid in the care and well being of his mother. Michael was a Chicago Cubs fan and always enjoyed playing fast pitch softball as a younger man. Most recently, Michael enjoyed gardening and observing the large variety of birds in the area.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Ernest Steffen.

Michael is survived by his mother, Esther Steffen of Montezuma; three brothers: Donald Steffen of Des Moines, Thomas Steffen of Deep River, Leroy (JoAnn) Steffen of Oskaloosa; two aunts: Barbara Ryan of Pleasantville and Sarah (Myron) Byers of Montezuma. He also leaves behind several cousins.
