DENNIS L. THOMPSON

Dennis L. Thompson, 66, of Grinnell, died Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 17, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Keith Morrison, chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Casket bearers were Steven Thompson, Roger Thompson, Jerry Thompson, Doug Thompson, Harold "Andy" Thompson and Eric Thompson. Honorary bearers were Calvin Turner and Frank Thompson. Military rites were conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Interment was at Ivy Hill Cemetery near Malcom.

Memorials may be directed to either Grinnell Regional Hospice or to Cancer Centers of America and sent in care of Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Dennis was born Dec. 18, 1948, in Grinnell to Harold and Romona Meldrem Thompson. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School. During the Viet Nam War he served in the United States Navy as a flight engineer. Following the war he returned to Grinnell and was married to Diana McGilvery. The couple raised four daughters and lived in Grinnell. He worked for over 40 years for various trucking companies and retired with Z-Line Trucking.

Dennis enjoyed camping, fishing, card games and spending time with his family. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings.

Survivors include four daughters, Tisha Conn of Grinnell, Tanya Nikkel of Grinnell, Tara Neal of Lynnville and Ashley Thompson of Des Moines; 17 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and seven brothers, Frank Thompson of Palm Beach City, Fla., Steven Thompson of Grinnell, Calvin Turner of Reinbeck, Roger Thompson of Brooklyn, Doug Thompson of Grinnell, Jerry Thompson of Grinnell and Harold "Andy" Thompson of Albuquerque, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
