ELSIE JONES SERVICES HELD

Elsie May Jones, 81, of Friendship Manor died Saturday morning at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jones were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel Ogata, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Lloyd Buhr, Doug Hoffsteter, Warren Miller, Don Roof, Gean Tiedemann, and Greg Tiedemann. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of George and Sarah Johnson Holcomb, she was born Aug. 3, 1897, at Bloomfield. She attended rural schools near the family farm home. On Jan. 12, 1916, she was married to Charles Lewis Jones at Bloomfield. The couple moved to the Lynnville community in 1918, and in 1923 they came to Grinnell.

Mrs. Jones was employed by Swift and Company for nine years, Grinnell College for 16 years, and at St. Francis Hospital for five years. She was a longtime member of the First United Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Rebekahs, the Pythian Sisters, and, for a time, the Victor Grange.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1953?; a daughter, Mrs. Amos (Mabel) Smith, in 1970; and seven sisters, Mrs. Alta Pearson, Mrs. Goldie Robb, Mrs. Ivy Smith, Mrs. Hazel Whitstine, Mrs. Alice Beason, Mrs. Viola Bittner, and Lorraine Holcomb.

Survivors include two brothers, Lester L. Holcomb of Grinnell and Clarence G. Holcomb of Packwood; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
