GERTRUDE HOLMES

Gertrude M. Holmes, 94, of the Mayflower died Friday, March 27, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Grinnell United Church of Christ-Congregational, with the Rev. Vicki Engelmann officiating. Family interment services were held Monday at Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She was born June 30, 1903, near Wheatland to William and Anna Hoker. She attended rural school and graduated from Wheatland High School in 1921. She was also a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

Following her education she taught in schools at Alta, Adel and Pleasanton.

She was married to Burton C. Holmes June 30, 1928, in Wheatland. They lived in Pleasanton, Truesdale, Fonda, Humboldt and Grinnell. Her husband served as superintendent of schools, and she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Holmes was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, the PEO, the Levart Club and the Tuesday Club.

Surviving are one son, William of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ruthann Illingsworth.
