HAROLD HORN

Harold Horn, 87, of Grinnell died on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A private family burial service was held today (Monday) at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. The Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit presented the flag. Smith Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Born Oct. 17, 1920, in Charles City, he was the son of Henry and Mary Vogt Horn. He was raised there and graduated from Charles City High School with the class of 1938.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines. Following the war, he worked in the flooring business in Conrad. In 1963, he moved to Grinnell and worked in the building and grounds department at Grinnell College.

Prior to his retirement in 1984, he served as director of maintenance at Grinnell.

He is survived by two sons, Phillip Horn of Austin, Texas, and Terry Horn of Des Moines; a daughter, Virginia Cortez of Lakewood, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Iva Volbrecht of Wichita, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters.
