The news of the death of Ben Hughes, Sr., came as a distinct shock to his many Grinnell friends and relatives. He died Friday, July 4th, in California, where he had gone in hopes of regaining his health, which had been very poorly for several years.

Ben Hughes was born August 6th, 1863, at Taylorville, Iowa, and passed away July 4th, 1924 in California. He came to Grinnell in 1876 and in the year of 1890 he united in marriage to Miss Edith Bicknell, of Kellogg. He leaves two brothers, Will of Grinnell, and Charles, of Boise, Idaho, and one sister, Lottie, also of Boise. Four children are left, one son and three daughters. They are: Bennie, Millie, Mabel and Charlotte.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from Snyder Bros. Chapel, conducted by Rev. Robert Lincoln. Interment was made at Hazelwood.
