Richard Ahrens, 66, Grinnell, Iowa, died on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa.

Richard was born on July 15, 1947, in Grinnell, Iowa to Donald and Virginia (Watson) Ahrens. He was raised in Grinnell, Iowa and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1965. He later served in the Army Reserves.

On Dec. 8, 1967 he was married to Carolyn Curtis at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked at the Maytag Company in Newton for nine years. In 1977 the family moved to Monticello and he worked as a sales representative for the Miracle Recreation Company. While living in Monticello he served on the Monticello Parks Board Department, the NRPA and the IPRA. Richard and Carolyn moved back to Grinnell, Iowa in 1991 and they owned and operated R-C Industries. Richard assisted with the planning and development of the Ahrens Park in Grinnell.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them in all their activities. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Ahrens, Grinnell, Iowa; two children, Todd (Angie) Ahrens, Indianola, Iowa and Tami (Scott Innis) Butler, Altoona, Iowa; four grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan, Jordan and Ashley; and three sisters, Linda (Noel) Mumm, Missouri Valley, Iowa, Debbie (Rob) Walker, Montezuma, Iowa and Vicki (Larry) Allen, Towanda, Ill.

He was preceded in death by both parents and his brother, Mike Ahrens.

Visitation will be held on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, Iowa beginning at 2 p.m. Family will be present from 5 – 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell, with a luncheon immediately following the service.

Interment will be at the Pleasant Township Cemetery near Ewart, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to Bright Kavanagh House and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa, 50112.
