ROMONA O. THOMPSON

Romona O. Thompson, 83, of Grinnell, died on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 11, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Calvin Turner officiating. Casket bearers will be her sons, Dennis, Steven, Roger, Douglas, Jerald and Andy Thompson. Honorary bearers will be her grandchildren. Interment will be at the Ivy Hill Cemetery near Malcom.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and the family will be present at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Should friends desire memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association.

Romona was born on May 10, 1930, at Hayward, Wisc., to Ervie and Alice Hall Meldrem. The family moved to Iowa and settled near Malcom and Brooklyn. She attended public schools in Malcom and graduated with the Class of 1947 from Malcom High School.

In November of 1947, she married Harold A. Thompson in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and besides being a mother and homemaker she worked at the Grinnell Shoe factory and the Morrison-Shults Glove Company. The couple also owned and operated the Courtesy Cab Company in Grinnell. They later resided in California and following her husband's death she lived in Truth or Consequences, N.M. She moved to Grinnell in 2011.

Romona enjoyed bingo, crocheting, puzzles and playing poker with her sons.

Survivors include her seven sons, Dennis Thompson, Steven Thompson, Douglas Thompson and Jerald Thompson, all of Grinnell, Calvin Turner of Reinbeck, Roger Thompson of Brooklyn and Andy Thompson of Albuquerque, N.M.; 21 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Karen Mason; and two brothers, Gene and Gaylord Meldrem.
