EVERETT COOPER

Everett Cooper, 87, of Grinnell died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Monday at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Russell Wentling, pastor of Newburg-Chester Congregational Church, officiating. Music was by Kathleen McCune, pianist, and Delmar and Norma Sharp and Rhonda Minner, vocalists. Casket bearers were his grandchildren, Leon Beck, Kimberly Cooper, David Cooper, Roger Beck, Randy Cooper and Daryl Beck. Honorary bearers were his great grandchildren. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery near Newburg. Memorials may be made to the Kellogg Museum Society, the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church or to the Hickory Grove Cemetery Association.

He was born March 18, 1916, near Kellogg to Alvin and Martha Slagle Cooper. He was raised on the family farm and attended school at Newburg. He was married on Oct. 14, 1936, in Newton to Betty Smith. They operated a grain, livestock and dairy farm in Jasper County until his retirement in 1995. He has resided at St. Francis Manor for the past five years.

He was a member of Hickory Grove Church, Jasper County Farm Bureau, Mid-American Dairy Association, Kellogg Coop and Kellogg Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife Betty Cooper of Seeland Park; one son Larry Cooper and one daughter Karen Beck, both of Grinnell; six grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and his half brother Alvin Cooper of Kellogg. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; five brothers William, Shelby, Delmar, Harmon and Richard Cooper and seven sisters, Lila Gregory, Grace Shoemaker, Myrtle Lamb, Ethel Lemke, Juanita Carlock, Rosalie Leavelle and Opal Smith.
