FOR DOCIA BATES

Mrs. Docia bates, 71, died on Tuesday afternoon after an illness of 2-1/2 years.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bates will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Northside Friends church with the Rev. Kenneth Headland, the church's pastor, and the Rev. Waldo Hicks of Boise, Idaho, officiating.

Mrs. L.V. Willison will be organist. Bob Butler, Eldon Speas, Gordon Van Donselaar, Harry Roberts, Delbert Elliott and Lee Mortenson will be pallbearers.

Burial will be in Hazelwood cemetery. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bates, the daughter of James and Audrey Bell Simms, was born near Nashville, Tenn., January 20, 1891. She attended Monticello, Ky. schools and was married to Marshall Bates at Birdtown, Tenn., March 24, 1905.

They moved to Grinnell in 1919. Mrs. Bates was an active member of the Northside Friends church.

Survivors include her husband; two children--Mrs. Zula Hockett of Grinnell and Wendell Bates of Newton; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Bates was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mrs. Harlan (Veva) Clark, on August 24, 1962; a son, Clyde Bates, in 1950; a sister; and two brothers.
