MARSHALL BATES RITES THURSDAY

Marshall Blaine Bates, 96, formerly of Grinnell died Monday morning, Feb. 9, at Embassy Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

Graveside services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hazelwood Cemetery, with Paul Prescott, pastor of the Marshalltown Church of Christ, officiating. Friends may call the Smith Funeral Home for additional information.

The son of Elisha and Kathryn Daniels Bates, he was born Nov. 9. 1884, at Monticello, Ky. He was married on March 24, 1905, to Docia Sims at Birdtown, Tenn.

Mr. and Mrs. Bates came to Grinnell in 1919. While living here, Mr. Bates was employed by Iowa Southern Utilities Co. as the night operator for the electric power and city steam plant. Following his wife's death in 1962, he made his home with his daughter, Zula Hockett, in Grinnell and Marshalltown. He had lived in Newton since 1979 to be near his son.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his children, Clyde Bates, Veva Clark and Zula Hockett; four brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include his son, Wendall Bates of Newton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Delia Huffaker and Rose Perkins, both of Monticello, Ky.
