Wendall E. Bates, 79, of Rte. 5, Newton, formerly of Grinnell, died Wednesday Nov. 24, at Pleasant Care Living Center in Pleasantville.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Daniel Ogata officiating. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
He was the son of Marshall and Docia Sims Bates and was born Oct. 3, 1914, on a farm near Monticello, Ky. He moved with his family to Grinnell and attended Grinnell schools. He was a 1934 graduate of Grinnell High School.
He was married to Alma Sharp Feb. 28, 1937, in Des Moines. Following his marriage he spent four years studying at the Minneapolis School of Art. He also attended the Art Students League in New York City for three years. In 1947 the family returned to Iowa, living in Grinnell and Waterloo before moving to an acreage near Newton.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife; one son, Thomas of Grapevine, Texas; and one daughter, Laura Yorburg of City Island, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Zula Hockett and Veva Clark; and one brother, Clyde.
