RITES HELD FOR HOCKETT, 72

Zula Bates Hockett, 72, of 512 E. Olive St. in Marshalltown, died Wednesday morning at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services for Zula Hockett were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with Paul Prescott, minister of the Marshalltown Church of Christ, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and a vocal quartet was offered by Kate Bjelland, James Black, Roy Lanier and Marge Solley.

Pallbearers were Ray Bjelland, Ed Crookshank, Paul Reese, David Shearer, Elmer VanEgdom and Mike VanEgdom. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Born Feb. 20, 1907, in Monticello, Ken., she was the daughter of Marshall and Docia Sims Bates. She and her family came to Grinnell in 1919, and she attended Grinnell schools, graduating from high school here. For a number of years she was employed at the Grinnell Glove Factory and the DeLong Jacket Factory.

Later she worked in Puerto Rico for a jacket factory, as office manager.

She had made her home in Marshalltown since 1970.

She is survived by her son, Donald Hockett of Canyon County, Calif., her father, Marshall Bates of State Center; a brother, Wendall Bates of Newton; and five grandsons. She was preceded in death by her mother; a sister, Mrs. Harlan (Veva) Clark; and a brother, Clyde Bates.
