ISAAC S. SHARP

Isaac S. Sharp, son of Ewell and Luella Dobbs Sharp, was born April 29, 1887 on the family farm near Mount Pisgah, Kentucky. On April 22, 1915 he was married to Bonnie May Smith at Mount Pisgah and after farming there for two years they moved to Grinnell, Iowa. He was first employed here at the Grinnell Washing Machine Company, then as boiler room operator for the Iowa Southern Utilities Company. He worked there 31 years and retired in 1952 when he suffered a stroke.

Ike worked hard and enjoyed many interests. He loved music and in his youth sang bass in the church choir and community gatherings. He also played the violin and banjo. He was an avid gardener and a great hunter. As a marksman he ranked high and liked to tell about the turkey shoots he took part in with Sgt. Alvin C. York, World War I hero. He was a great student of the Bible and took a sincere interest in politics.

Surviving are five children, Alma (Mrs. Wendall Bates) of Newton; Doris, (Mrs. Henry Krumm) of Grinnell; Mrs. Opal Lusk of Des Moines; Floyd of Grinnell and James of Newton. There are eleven grandchildren, Thomas and Laura Bates, Mrs. Donald Durr, Mrs. Jack Means, Kenneth Krumm, Jeffrey Lusk, Kathy, Bonnie and Sara Sharp, Danny and Maria Sharp, and two great-grandchildren. Jeffrey Lusk made his home with his grandparents. Also surviving is one brother, John Sharp of Jamestown, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.

Mr. Sharp had been in failing health since July and died March 6, 1963. Funeral services were conducted by Smith Funeral Home, Saturday, March 9, with Rev. Loy Olmstead of Des Moines officiating. Mrs. Kathleen Heffner, organist, played some of his favorite hymns. Pallbearers were Donald Brauer and Raymond De Bord of Des Moines, Donald Durr, Eugene Slaven, Myles Olson and Harold Vinson of Grinnell. Mrs. Mary Brauer and Mrs. Myles Olson served as flower bearers. Burial was at Hazelwood cemetery.
