WALTER IRA WINCHELL

Walter Ira Winchell, 79, of Troy, Kan., and formerly of Grinnell, died Monday, March 14, 2011, at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo.

Funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, March 17, at the Harman-Rhode Funeral Home in Troy, with burial in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association.

Walter was born March 4, 1932, in Malcom, the son of Ralph Raymond and Hazel Almina Garretson Winchell. On Aug. 10, 1952, he was united in marriage with Ila Jean Tharp at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the American Legion in Malcom. He owned and operated a DX service station and a trucking business in Grinnell prior to moving to Troy in 1970. He then worked for Research Seeds in St. Joseph as plant manager.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dennis and Larry Winchell, both of St. Joseph; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Glenn, Lloyd, Charles, Merle and John; and four sisters, Edna, Ella, Wanda and Elizabeth.
