Jane Baird, the eldest child of John and Frances Baird was born in Fermanagh county, Ireland, July 12, 1843 and departed this life at her home near Deep River, Iowa, Sunday, November 8, 1931 at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 27 days.

Of the seven children she is the fourth to pass on to the better world. Those remaining are Mrs. Frank Sackett of Brooklyn, Mrs. C. B. Harry of Mason City, and Robert Baird of Montezuma. The family came to America in the year of 1855 settling in Illinois where she grew to womanhood. Shortly after her marriage in 1871 to Richard Johnston they moved to his farm in Lincoln township near Deep River, where she spent the remaining sixty years of her life. Her husband preceded her in death twenty four years ago. To this union eight children were born, two of whom were waiting for her on the celestial shore. The remaining are: Mrs. Ella Johnson, George, Richard and Robert, all of Deep River, John of Montezuma and Luther of Zenda, Kansas.

By her death her children, who never failed to be objects of her love and solicitude, are greatly bereaved; while nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, many other relatives and friends join them in grief over her loss from their circle.

In early live she was a member of the Episcopal church but for the last fifty years had been a member of the Methodist church. She was a faithful attendant at services held in the Ridge schoolhouse and continued her worship in the church which was built there later.

For several years she has been in failing health, the last 20 months confined to her bed and her children, especially George, who made his home with her, have done all that loving care and patient tender ministration could do to brighten her last days.
