MRS. ELIZA ANN HOLMES

Mrs. Eliza Ann Holmes passed away at her home 1119 Spring street, last Friday morning at the advanced age of 90 years and 30 days.

Eliza Ann Utley was born at Pawlet, Vermont, August 26, 1824, and was married to John Holmes in East Otto, New York, in 1845. Mr. Holmes served in the Civil War in Company H, 78th N.Y. Infantry. After his term of service had expired, he and his family came to Chester, Iowa, in November, 1863. Here they raised their children, moving to Grinnell in 1887. Here they lived till death claimed them. Mrs. Holmes was an active, helpful woman, full of kindness to others and devoted to her family. She was active in church work and a much beloved member of the Woman's Relief Corps. Her husband was a fifer in the army during the Civil War and up to the time of his death in 1907 was adjutant of Gordon Granger Post G.A.R.

She was the mother of four sons and three daughters, of whom four survive her and were present at the funeral. They are Eugene D. Holmes, of Albany, N.Y., Mrs. Emma S. Jones, of Breda, Iowa, Mrs. E.M. McCoy, of Pasadena, Calif., and Frank L. Holmes of Grinnell. There are also surviving ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

In the absence of her pastor, Rev. P.F. Marston, Rev. J.M. Brown conducted the funeral services Sunday afternoon from the home. The following members of Gordon Granger Post served as pallbearers: Leroy Forehand, Uriah Vanderveer, H.I. Davis, T.G. Pilgrim, J.S. Rollins and P.D. Burton. Interment wad in Hazelwood cemetery beside her husband, who preceded her eight years in death.
