Phineas George Vanum, son of Wm. and Elizabeth Kimball Varnum, was born Oct. 22, 1850 at Peacham, Vermont, and departed from this life Sept. 16, 1919. He came to Iowa in 1866 and resided on the farm, where he was fatally injured about 24 hours before his death, since 1867. Of his immediate family only two remain to mourn his loss: his brother, Isaac K. Varnum, and his sister, Mrs. Lizzie Braden, his father, mother, elder brother and one sister having preceded him to the other world. The only other relatives are three nieces, four nephews and several cousins.
Phin, as he was familiarly called by everyone, was a kind brother, a great lover of books and a faithful friend. His books, his friends and his lodge were his all.
Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church in Malcom, Ia., Sept. 18, 1919, under the auspices of the K.P. Lodge of which he was a member for over 25 years. Rev. W. B. --reland spoke beautiful words of comfort, after which he was laid to rest near his father and mother in the cemetery at Malcom.
Friends from a distance who attended the services were Miss Blanche Varnum and Mrs. Lulu Varnum Rider from Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Mayne and Phineas Varnum from Marshalltown, Dr. Alma J. Chapman of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Fred Varnum and son of Zearing, Iowa.
