Harold DeFrance Dies
In Grinnell Hospital

Harold DeFrance, 72, of 1006 Pearl Street, died Monday evening, Sept. 18 at St. Francis Hospital following a brief illness.

The son of Charles DeFrance and Minnie Bruseau, Mr. DeFrance was born on Nov. 30, 1894 at Williams, Iowa. He attended Webster City Business College and enlisted in the Army during World War I serving with the Headquarters Company of the 163rd Depot Brigade.

Following the war, Mr. DeFrance played the trombone in several musical organizations, among them the Minneapolis Symphony, the New York Police Department Band, and the Carl King Band. He was also employed for a time in Boone with the Northwestern Railroad.

Mr. DeFrance had made his home in Grinnell for the last seven years.

On May 5, 1920 he married the former Alma M. Lee. To this union was born one son: Forrest L. DeFrance of Marshalltown, Iowa.

Survivors include his son; two grandchildren: Lon DeFrance with the United States Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor, and Vicki DeFrance, a student at Mankato State Teachers College.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Lloyd DeFrance and Leon DeFrance.

Funeral services for Mr. DeFrance were held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne A. Shireman, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner. Pallbearers were Charles Campbell, Raymond Criswell, Acel Worley, Columbus VanTrees, Paul Diggins and Jerome Slebiska.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery with W.K. Richardson, commander, and Jack Day, chaplain, and members of the Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the Grinnell American Legion Ceremonial Unit conducting the graveside rites.
