OBITUARY
--------------
GEO. W. DUFFUS

Geo. W. Duffus died at his home in this city Thursday, March 7, of pneumonia, to which failing health of several years' affliction caused him to fall an easy victim. He was nearly 62 years old.

Mr. Duffus was born just west of Montezuma, May 25, 1856, the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Duffus. His parents were among the pioneers of this county, and the deceased lived thro the pioneer period, suffering privations as all early settlers did, but using the hardships of the day to better fit him for the active duties of life.

There were six boys and two daughters in this family, and all have aided in making the name of Duffus an honorable one, for all lived up to the high ideals instilled into them in early life.

In 1873 Alexander Duffus moved to a farm south of Malcom, and here Geo. W. Duffus grew into manhood. On March 7, 1883, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Corrough, of Malcom. They lived together just 35 years, his death occurring on the anniversary of their marriage. For several years he and his wife managed a farm. In the nineties he engaged in the hardware business a few years in Malcom with his brother-in-law, Will, under the name of Duffus and Corrough. He then moved to New Sharon, where for a few years he owned and operated the coal mines just east of that place.

In 1908 he moved to Grinnell and for ten years this city has been his home.

One daughter, Edna, was born to Mr. and Mrs. *Corrough, who is now at home with her mother. She is a graduate of the State University of Iowa.

Mr. Duffus joined the Presbyterian church at Malcom, and his quiet, upright life was eloquent testimony to his belief in Jesus.

The impressive funeral service was held at the home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.M. Vittum. Mrs. Scheve sang a solo, "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth," by M. Scheve, Mrs. G.L. Pierce at the piano.

It fell to the part of his nearest relatives to perform the last funeral rites as pall bearers. They were three brothers, Alex Duffus, of Montezuma; John R. Duffus, of Pipestone, Minn.; W.H. Duffus, of Grinnell; and three brothers-in-law, Jas. Corrough and Will Corrough, of Grinnell, and Samuel Corrough, of Arkoe, Mo.

One other brother survives him, A.J. Duffus, of Idaho, and two sisters, Mrs. Jas. Novak, of Malcom, and Elizabeth Duffus, also of Malcom. The remaining brother, Gordon S. Duffus, died at Colfax, Can., a few years ago.

Of all the pioneer settlers in this county, none have done more to give it a good name than have the Duffus and Corrough families, and none have lived more consistently to the high Christian ideals of their Scotch ancestry.

A worthy man has gone to his reward, leaving the inheritance of a good name.
