MRS. WILLIAM SHERMAN

Our quiet community was startled last Friday morning, by the intelligence that Mrs. William Sherman had suddenly passed away the evening before. Last Tuesday, in company with her husband, she visited her son, Mr. Newton Sherman, spending the night there, and Wednesday night with her daughter, Mrs. Harrison Wheelock, in Grinnell. She returned home Thursday evening about sundown, and had made some little preparation for supper, when she was suddenly seized with pain, and in a few moments, exchanged the darkness and night of earth for the glory and unending day of heaven.

Mrs. Sherman was born in Newport, N.H., Sept. 30th, 1801. She was married to Mr. Sherman Nov. 28th, 1824, and for twenty-five years they lived upon their farm in Croydon. In Oct. 1849, they moved West, residing first in Illinois, then in Lyons, Iowa, and for the last fourteen years in Chester.

She was naturally of a very quiet, but cheerful disposition, a great worker, patient and persevering to the end. She was scrupulously neat in her household arrangements, and though seventy-seven years of age, performed all her domestic work alone. For thirty-seven years she was a professing Christian, and a firm believer in evangelical truth. She was a great lover of the sanctuary, and always in her accustomed place, when her health would allow. Four years ago last Nov. she and her husband enjoyed the privilege, accorded to but few, of celebrating their golden wedding.

Besides her husband, four sons and a daughter survive her.

The funeral took place from the Congregational Church, in Chester, last Sabbath, the sermon being preached by her Pastor, from the words, "I am the resurrection and the life." The large concourse present testified to the universal esteem in which she was held.
