One of the early settlers of Poweshiek county passed away when Mrs. Eliza Crist died February 15 at her home in Carthage, Mo. Mrs. Crist was the mother of Mrs. M.E. Sears, of Chester, who attended the funeral and remained for a visit in Carthage, returning to her home last Saturday.

Mrs. Crist was Eliza Comstock, and was born in Holmes county, Ohio, September 17, 1829. In girlhood she united with the United Brethren church. When 20 years old she married *Jacob Gwin and came to Iowa with him about 1851. They bought a farm on the state road between Malcom and Brooklyn and made their home there for many years. Five children were born to this marriage, two of whom survive.

Being left a widow Mrs. Gwin later married William Koester. Four children were born to this union, of whom three survive During the Civil war Mr. Koester was a soldier in the Union army and while he was absent his wife and her son, George H. Gwin carried on the work of the farm and kept the home fires burning. With some of the money received while in service Mr. Koester purchased for her a piece of silk which she kept and which furnished the material for her burial robe.

After the death of Mr. Koester, his widow was married again to John H. Crist. To this union two children were born.

About thirty years ago the family moved to a farm near Carthage Mo., and eleven years ago, when Mrs. Crist's health failed, they moved into that town. During the last years of her life Mrs. Crist made her home in Carthage with her son, John A. Koester. The other children are George H. Gwin of Des Moines, Mrs. Sarah Posten, of Shambaugh, Iowa, Mrs. Alice M. Sears of Chester, and Mrs. Mary M. Clifton of Carthage. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Underhill of Beloit, Kas., Mrs. Mary Brown of Avilla, Mo., and Mrs. Maria Tapponden of California.

During her latter years Mrs. Crist was a member of the Friends church. She was aged 92 years and 5 months.
