DOUGLAS SUSENS RITES AT HERRICK

Douglas P. Susen, 23, of 2134 Green St., San Francisco, Calif., died of cystic fibrosis early Friday , April l7, at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco while awaiting a donor for a heart-lung transplant at Stanford Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Herrick Chapel on the Grinnell College campus, with the Rev. Leslie Carole Taylor, interim chaplain, officiating. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and left at the Smith Funeral Home.

The son of Dr. George P. and Sharon Ohlson Susens he was born Jan. 6, 1964, at Ft. Sheridan, Ill. In 1965 his family moved to San Francisco, and he attended the schools of San Rafael, Calif., graduating from South Lake Tahoe High School in 1982 as a National Merit commended scholar. He attended Grinnell College and received his degree in 1986 with a major in chemistry and a minor in computer studies.

During his junior year he received the American Chemical Society award in analytical chemistry. Following his graduation he was employed as a computer analyst for the Helm Financial Corporation in San Francisco.

He is survived by his mother, Sharon Ohlson Susens of South Lake Tahoe; his father and stepmother, George and Millicent Susens of San Francisco; one sister, Karin Susens, a sophomore a Grinnell College; his maternal grandmother, Edith Ohlson Adamson of Cherokee, and his paternal grandparents M. George and Barbara Phelps Susens of Crestone, Colo.

His family has had close connections with Grinnell College. His great-grandparents, Louis V. and Alice Phelps, held the positions of college treasurer and acting dean of women respectively.
