BEN TORRANCE OF BROOKLYN DIES

(From The Brooklyn Chronicle)

The community was shocked Monday to hear of the death of Ben Torrance. Few persons knew that he had been critically ill. For some time Mr. Torrance has been out of health but not until a few days before his death did his condition become alarming. Mr. Torrance was one of the best men of the community and his death has brought sorrow not only to his own family but to many others who knew and respected him.

Benjamin Franklin Torrance was born in Trenton, N.J., Sept. 17, 1876, and passed away in Brooklyn, Ia., March 20, 1933.

Feb. 5, 1907, he was united in marriage with Ion Shannon, which union was blest with three daughters, Louise, Phyllis and Esther. Besides the bereft wife and daughters, he leaves three brothers and one sister, as follows: William and Thomas Torrance of Brooklyn and Walter Torrance of Grinnell, Ia.; and Mrs. S.S. Ormiston of Brooklyn; with a host of friends and acquaintances, all of whom will miss this splendid character.

When quite young, Mr. Torrance united with the Congregational church and when the family moved to Brooklyn, they united with Grace Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Torrance was of a quiet disposition and was held in the very highest esteem by all who knew him.

A few days ago he became suddenly ill and everything that medical aid and skill could do was done for him, kind hands ministered unto him, but his work seemed to be done and he rests from his labors and his works follow him.

Funeral services from the M.E. church Tuesday at 2 p.m. were conducted by Rev. J.H. Freedline. Interment was made in the Brooklyn cemetery.

The following people from Grinnell attended the funeral: Dr. and Mrs. E.F. Talbott, David Talbott, Mrs. Eldon Olds, Mrs. Mary Swain, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Torrance and Irene.
