MICHAEL BURKLE

Michael M. Burkle, 39, of 311 S. Third St., Burlington, formerly of Grinnell, was found dead in his apartment Tuesday, April 9.

The date of death has not been determined, and the cause is pending the results of an autopsy.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the United Church of Christ-Congregational. The body will be cremated. There will be no visitation.

The son of Howard R. and Jeanne Mayo Burkle, he was born Aug. 16, 1951, in Fort Smith, Ark.

He moved with his family to Grinnell in 1958 and attended school here, graduating from high school in 1969. He was a 1974 graduate of Grinnell College, earning a degree in art. He later attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and had acquired 30 hours of credit toward a master's degree.

He taught art for one year in junor and senior high school at Cawker City, Kan., then returned to Grinnell where he worked for The Grinnell Herald-Register as a photographer and graphic artist in 1976-77. He was a news and feature writer for the Carroll County News in Eureka Springs, Ark., from 1978 to 1980 and worked as a graphics-camera operator for Krause Publications in Iolia, Wis., from 1981 to 1983.

Mr. Burkle returned to Grinnell where he owned and operated Prompt Printing Co. from 1985 to 1988. He had recently worked as a freelance artist.

Surviving are his father, Howard, and his sister, Amy Eilert, both of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanne, and one sister Heidi.

Memorials in his name may be left at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
