MRS. W.U. SULSER

Alice Anna Smith, daughter of Wm. D. and Harriet Smith was born at Port Byron, Rock Island County, Ill., June 10, 1862.

In 1870 the parents and three children, Rose, Alice and George, moved to Grinnell and settled on a farm four miles south of town.

She received her early education at Maple Grove and later spent several years in Grinnell College.

After leaving college she taught several years in country schools among which was Maple Grove, the home school.

In the spring of 1886 the family moved to Reno county, Kansas, where Novemer 20, 1886, she was united in marriage with W.U. Sulser, a former schoolmate.

The young couple settled on a homestead in Sherman county, Kansas, where they remained till July, 1888, where final proof was made on the land and they removed to Ireton, Sioux county, Iowa, where they remained twenty years and became identified with the social, religious, business and educational interests of that town.

In May, 1908, the family consisting of parents and three sons, located in University Place, Des Moines, where the mother died early Monday morning, Feb. 20, 1911.

Early in life she became imbued with the spirit of service and she united with the M.E. church at Blue Point at the age of fourteen. She took an active part in all the departments of the church serving at various times as teacher and superintendent of the Sudnay School.

Her membership was transferred to the M.E. church at Ireton where she continued her Christian work and was actively identified with the Sunday School. On removal to Des Moines her membership was transferred to Grace Church where her interest continued tho declining health no longer permitted active work.

Her Christian character shone out in her daily life and was an example and inspiration to all who came in contact with her. She was ever thoughtful of others and true to her convictions. She was a dutiful daughter, a devoted wife and a loving mother. She leaves a husband and three sons, W.U. Sulser, Jr., of Sioux City, Clare S. aged 18, and Bissel T., age 16.

The funeral was attended at the home of A.J. Blakely, Feb. 22, 1911, at 2 p.m. Rev. Elias Handy, officiated. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery, Grinnell, Iowa.
