GRINNELL MAN DIES OF NOV. 10 CRASH INJURIES

Elvin Clyde Vanness, 91, of Lakeside Mobile Home Court, Grinnell, died early Wednesday of injuries received in a one-car accident Sunday.

Authoriteis said he was a passenger in a car driven by a relative, Judy *Tickel of Wolfeboro, N.H. The car had a flat tire and went into a ditch seven miles north of Pella.

Elvin Vanness was born Aug. 21, 1883, at Reasnor, Iowa, the son of William and Caroline Martin Vanness. He attended the Reasnor public schools. On March 11, 1913, he was married to Elsie Butin Nolin at Newton. The couple had three children, Mrs. Doratha Geurts of Grinnell, Howard Vanness of Grinnell, and Mrs. Doris Drayson of Sunnyvail, Calif.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Vanness made their home in Sully. Mr. Vanness was a mason in the building construction business. He served on the Sully School Board, the Sully Town Council and the fire department of that community. Mrs. Vanness died Dec. 19, 1953, and for the past four years Mr. Vanness had made his home in Grinnell with his daughter Doratha.

He is survived by his three children; six grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Leo (Leota) Oelson of Morristown, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one grandson, Billy Lee Geurts who died March 4, 1972; two sisters, Mrs. Mary McReynolds and Mrs. Sarah Wert; and four brothers, George, Robert, Vern and Virgil.

Funeral services for Mr. Vanness will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Russell Boersma, pastor of the Grinnell Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Organist will be Mrs. Leonard Pearce.

Burial will be at the Palo Alto Cemetery south of Newton.
