OBITUARY.

MR. CHARLES FISHER, who died in this town, July 19th, was a native of Chester, Vt., where he was born April 12, 1834. After the usual New England boyhood and education, he left his home two days before he reached the age of 21 years, for Grinnell, whither a sister greatly esteemed, Mrs. Whitcomb, had preceded him. He was here five years, part of the time employed with R.M. Kellogg, Esq., till his marriage in Dec. 1860, when he made his home on the farm he was preparing in Chester township. Some five years later he and Mrs. Fisher, who died before him, were among the original members of the Chester Church.

His character, as a Christian and a man in active life, was equally sound, trustworthy and thorough. No questions were ever raised as to his purposes or spirit. He was a man to rely upon absolutely, as to integrity, fidelity, promptness, and the conscientious discharge of duties and trusts laid upon him. He was always in his place, and always filled it. He helped make society solid, as well as to give confidence and prosperity to the business of the community. His active benevolence and the scale of it were among his plain but unpretending excellencies. He was an intelligent Christian, acting from deliberation, conviction, and principle. Those who successively filled the Chester pulpit found him a pillar of strength.

He had been less leaned upon during his residence here, because it did not begin till he was a paralytic, removing here after the tornado, which brought on a second shock of paralysis. But he bore the same quiet character, worthy of all confidence, as at Chester.
