Love of Music and of Flowers, Fondness for Children and Friendliness Her characteristics
----------------------------

Mrs. Amanda M. Kiesel was born to Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Huebner at Itzehoe, Holstein, Germany, July 19, 1859. She received a good education in languages and music. She took her confirmation vows in the Lutheran church and remained sincere in her Christian faith until death.

In 1886 she came to the United States and five years later she and her parents and two boys came to Grinnell to make their home. She has lived here continuously since, with the exception of two extended visits which she made to the scene of her girlhood in Germany.

She was gifted as a pianist and as a singer, having been a member of the Oratorio Society for many years. Her love of the beautiful was disclosed in many other ways. Her garden was full of flowers; her home had its characteristic touches of loveliness. A number have remarked upon her great fondness for children and their quick response to her friendliness. They learned from her an affectionate interest in birds and animals, those whom St. Francis called "his little brothers." There was a winsome childlikeness in this, Mrs. Kiesel's tender care which she exhibited for her dumb friends.

Her great pride and happiness in life centered upon her two stalwart sons and their families. Their consistent and generous thoughtfulness of her was the natural reflection of her constant devotion to them and her unbounded confidence in them. Her old neighbors recall her many little acts of goodwill and her brightening presence in their homes.

Those who visited her sick room during the last three months when she was so ill at the hospital could hardly realize that she was passing, so youthful was her spirit. Death came to her home Monday forenoon, December third.

She is survived by her two sons, Ferdinand J. of Grinnell and Karl, of Madison, Wisconsin, and by two grandchildren, Paul of Grinnell and Virginia, of Madison.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the F.J. Kiesel home conducted by Rev. E.W. Cross. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. E.B.T. Spencer, Miss Stella Bartlett, Fred Morrison and Walter Read.

The pall bearers were John Mehlin, C.E. Bonyata, Chas. Hink, M.J. Douglas, James Boettger and F.F. Almy.
