FUNERAL SERVICES FOR A.E. POLLARD

Funeral services were said over the body of A.E. Pollard Tuesday afternoon from the church of Christ, of which he had been a member for so many years. The Rev. W.F. Vanderlip, pastor of the Presbyterian church, was in charge of the services.

Music was by a male quartette composed of Leo Duncan, Harold Bryan, Forest Horsford and Harold Bone. Interment was in the local cemetery with the lodges having charge of the services.

The following obituary was read at the services:

A.E. Pollard, or "Amy" Pollard, as his friends knew him more intimately, passed away at his home in Montezuma, Iowa, a few minutes after the sunrise of Easter morning, April 5, 1931. He was born in Ontonagon, Michigan, on August 24, 1861, and passed away at the age of sixty nine years, seven months and eleven days.

He was of English parentage. His father, Thomas E. Pollard, and mother, Rebecca Hall Pollard, came to Iowa when "Amy" was very young, and took up government land just north of Old Dresden, near Deep River. After giving up farming the family moved to Brooklyn, and later to Montezuma. Mr. Pollard had lived here for fifty years or more. There was a family of eight children, several of whom died in infancy. The mother followed in 1888, the father following others, passed away in 1903. Of the children of Mr. Pollard's family, two are left to mourn his loss, Mrs. Sophia Rutherford of Des Moines and Fred C. Pollard of Valley Junction.

Mr. Pollard married Mary Louise Adair in 1884, and to this union were born four children, two boys and two girls. Cleo Pollard Fisher passed away in December 1918, and was soon followed by her sister, Milly Pollard Klindt in February 1919. The two boys, Walter L. Pollard of Montezuma, and Warren E. Pollard of Des Moines, three grandsons, James and Harry Pollard and Edwin Fisher, of Montezuma, with "Mother" are left to mourn "Dad's" going.

For thirty-five years, Mr. Pollard was a harness maker. In 1915 he was made Recorder of Poweshiek county, and served in a marked and efficient way the people of his county. He stayed in that office until 1929. In very poor health after leaving the office, he started a small harness shop at his home and was enjoying enough trade to keep him busy and ease his suffering.

From early manhood he has been a member of the Christian church and has served in every capacity of lowly service to the honored place of elder. Mr. Pollard was the officiating elder at the laying of the cornerstone of the present church. His many efforts were always appreciated and the experience with the several gospel teams was always a joyful service and one he enjoyed to render.

Mr. Pollard was always a lover of his lodges. He was an ardent member of the Knights of Pythias, the Odd Fellows, and Masonic orders, and the various orders affiliated with them. The association made with his many brothers was always a guiding force in his home and community life. All of the orders participated in his last rites and showed their true spirit of fraternalism many times before his death.

Mr. Pollard was a charter member of Montezuma's Volunteer Fire Department, and was made an honorary member several years ago.

He will be missed so much in his home, but as much in his place in the life of the community. From the boy who would come to the shop to ask for a strap to the man who came to pass away a short time with him, from the one who came to ask his help to the one who wanted his advice, his passing marks that of a real friend.

We feel his loss and are much comforted by the kindly clasp of the hands of friends who come to us, but we must carry on and into every part of our lives his "big brother" way must go to bless those who come in touch with us as he blessed those who knew him.
