Hunter Dies of Heart Attack

Search Party Finds Body of Earl Story, 60

A search party of between 40 and 50 men was organized Tuesday evening to find the body of Earl Butler Story, 60, of Malcom who died of a heart attack on his birthday while hunting on the Lyle Bauman place 2 miles north and 1/2-east of Malcom.

During the noon hour Story was hunting on the Bauman place with Craig Carter and a grandson, Jack Smith, both of Malcom. They went separate ways in the woods and when Story failed to return to the car at the appointed time of 3 o'clock, his companions began looking for him.

Found at 8 o'clock

After searching awhile, Carter and Smith returned to Malcom to see if Story had gone back there. Unable to locate him, a group was formed to conduct the search. The hunter was found at 8 o'clock by Carter and Pearly Smith about 100 yards from the buildings.

Coroner W. B. Phillips and Sheriff Bill Welsh and Deputy Harold Weidow were summoned. The former found that the death was due to coronary thrombosis occurring about 2:30 p.m.

There was a squirrel in Story's pocket; his gun had been reloaded but had not been fired. The Malcom man had been suffering from heart trouble in recent years.

Funeral Friday

Funeral services will be held Friday at Smith funeral home here at 4 p.m., conducted by the Rev. C. E. Kingsley of the First Baptist church. Burial will be in Ivy Hill cemetery at Malcom.

Music at the service will be furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bohstedt. Pallbearers will be Ralph and Virgil McCammant, Ralph Wentzel, Ivan Longnecker, John Guddendorf and Kenneth McKeag. Mrs. Opal McCammant and Mrs. Grace McKeag will serve on the flower committee.

In Malcom 42 years

The son of Aaron and Leila White Story, Story was born Sept. 15, 1893, in Putnam county, Missouri. He was married March 11, 1913, to Elizabeth Erickson who preceded him in death two years ago. They moved to Malcom 42 years ago.

Four children survive, Mrs. Pearly (Bernice) Smith of Malcom, Ernest of Morrison and Fred and Earl Jr. of Malcom. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Verna Purkeypile of Unionville, Mo, and Mrs. Olive Sinclair of Indianola, and a brother Vaughn of Tama.
