He later traveled the country painting stadium seating and installing underground cable, settling in Kansas in the early 1990s.

He enjoyed fishing and deer hunting with friends, and was a league regular at the Bowladrome here. He was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club and the American Legion in Malcom for many years, before joining the American Legion in Meriden.

He is survived by his former wife Barbara; children Michael Boots of Ames, Jason Boots of Grinnell and Amanda Boots of Cedar Rapids; a brother Randy Rhodes and a sister Sherry Ellis, both of Cedar Rapids; his companion Judy Norton of Meriden and her sons Randy Norton of Meriden and Jerry Taliaferro of Topeka; and 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
